Fuel Injection
The good news about EFI:
It is amazing; Flexible, Powerful, Reliable, and can produce bullet proof Torque and Hp and add built in engine protection only modern electronics offer.
***We now have the ability to reprogram some stock ecu's. This is by far the best dollar to performance ratio as the stock control units are as good and as flexible as the high end units below. The newer stock ecu's have outstanding engine protection stock. Smart.
Companies:
If you have zero experience with EFI mapping I strongly suggest taking a class or at least buy a book from my good friend Ben Strader (EFI 101). I cannot stress that mapping is a lot tougher than some people and companies lead us to believe. Most importantly we are dealing with two strokes and there is no lambda sensor that helps with air fuel ratios. Mapping injection can be very fun and rewarding but can also break your heart and bank account.
The benefits from properly mapped EFI are amazing and some of today’s ECU’s have built in safety or engine protection that help keep your expensive hot rod alive. It is important to get your air fuel ratio in the ballpark but absolutely a must to dial in an ignition curve for peak performance. We commonly see an ignition swing of more than 10 degrees depending on the build from bottom to top end.
The bad news about fuel injection:
This is again where Mercury Marine shines. They know their stuff and have a good understanding of mapping using both real world conditions and employ state of the art dyno testing procedures.
At DBR we have tested, raced and played with Motec, EFI Technology, Link, Vipec, Autronic,Mercury, Brucato and SDS. The more expensive the product the more cool the features. I believe it is still possible today to win a drag race with simple digital stand-alone fuel controller, the least “smart” in the bunch. However, if I were to want to control fuel only inexpensively the Brucato PCU is a steal and would be my choice. Tony has tons of start maps and he can help you one on one. Brucato is a great company with hundreds of units in the field and wonderful support. He understands fuel mapping.
If money were no object and you want to create more power I would use EFI Technology, Motec, or Pi, period. They all have amazing data logging and extremely bullet proof hardware and flexibility. There support and knowledge shadows us outboard guys. Most of their staffs deal with big time budget programs and are very friendly if you can fit it in your budget. Apex speed is another source for general electronics and packs a power house support team.
Link, Vipec, and Autronic are all in the more affordable category and we have seen some pretty amazing results with extreme flexibility like Motec with some of these. Actually fantastic flexibility with engine protection. Most of these do not have the high end logging capability as Motec or EFI but can be tied to third party inexpensive dashes (Racepak's IQ3) that expand the logging rates and have there own analysis software that is great. Racpak is good stuff
After 15 years of mapping we have a good understanding of many, actually all of these ECU’s. We can help you develop your engine on the dyno with your ECU of choice. We do of course have our favorites to fit budgets. We are now learning and modifying the stock ECU's on new engines. This is going to help budget efforts with extremely huge returns on investment. I don't ever see stock electronics working better than the indy car electronics in full race trim only because of lack of logging however the processors and mapping possibilities of these new ECU's is remarkable. Think about it, these days how many Yamaha, Honda, BRP, or Mercury engines are mapped wrong from the factory. None. These engineers are brilliant and provide the general public with great engines. The possibilities of re-flashing these ECU's to a specific hot rod build is as real as it gets on modified engines. It is being done everyday. We are collaborating with brilliant people to help bring this reliable high performance "Re- program" at a reasonable cost. Stay tuned...this is fun. There is a correct product to fit most budget need requirements especially if you are just trying to move a limiter a few hundred rpm.The days of re-programing stock ecu's are here. There is only one tune to fit an engine with a specific list of parts, fuel, and performance requirements. This is the same for a Motec or the stock ECU. When the parameters and parts change you can adjust a Motec yourself and possible kill your engine or go with a reputable re-calibrate team with experience and save money.

The bad news about fuel injection:
- It is hard to do without educating yourself or good help from someone who has experience.
- It can be expensive.
- You get what you pay for.
- You can blow up a bunch of stuff learning.
