ECU "Re-Mapping" 101
Flashing, re-calibration, re-mapping, whatever you want to
call it is here. It works, it is amazing, it is reasonable, and it is smart.
Since around 2005, the newer outboard engines have been manufactured with engine control
systems that are leaps and bounds forward of their predecessors and have opened
our eyes resulting in a service that is designed to take the pain out of
upgrading the newer engines for racing. Staggering cost to performance ratio
gain is now within reach.
DBR re-calibrated Ecu's and Emm's are winning championships and races globally.
What is re-calibrating?
Re–calibration is a procedure that requires the ability to connect a computer via proprietary custom made software to an engines ECU/EMM. This allows the tuner, through very sophisticated dyno testing, the ability to change calibrations to match a particular level of engine upgrade. This is exactly the same procedure used in changing/ tuning of both high end after market electronics or stock electronics in any motor vehicle from your truck to formula one cars. This is nothing new…just new for us. We see limitless possibilities via re-calibration and the value is huge, here’s why:
Mercury, BRP, and Yamaha are very smart. Their products are fantastic and reliable. You already own the stock electronics. You own all the wiring and expensive ignition components and sensors that come stock on an engine. To change a Merc 300 to an aftermarket system could set you back 5 to 15 thousand dollars depending on the manufacture. I have done it…it works…it’s awesome…it hurts. It is also very impractical as these systems have zero programming and one can almost count on many engine failures learning how to tune. This option done properly requires a good engine dyno and tuner. In the world of high end racing, this is a viable option as data logging comes with these aftermarket systems and can help to be competitive in today’s high tech racing world. DBR is working on an outboard specific ecu with logging and ignition for high end racing applications.
What can be done when re-calibrating the stock ecu?
How we do it:
Simply put, this is a staggering amount of work on our end. We obtain an engine and immediately tear it apart and inspect it for the how and why’s of what the factory did for our own education. We try to understand their approach to what they have made and go from there.
We then add upwards of additional 20 sensors linked to high-end data acquisition on the stock engine. We proceed direct to the lake and beat the hell out of it (that is the only fun part). We then have massive quantities of engineering data that helps us in understanding why and strengthens our ability to proceed to the dyno room and start the long process of R&D. We now have all kinds of real world data as a true base line. We Then go to work on making more power. The result is race-winning re-programs matched with their respective parts, modifications and performance available in a variety of “DBR Levels”.
We can also custom make a map to your spec.

What can be done when re-calibrating the stock ecu?
- For Racing almost anything. Adjust limiters, and anything else that makes it run. In fact you can do the same as most other engine management systems, however the beauty of the stock ecu is that it is already mapped well from the factory. We have to acknowledge and throw a huge “kudos” out to Mercury racing and Yamaha as they are extremely dialed in stock. We have now run E-techs, however software is still under construction. We are getting close. Performance and reliability gains are staggering.
- Remove or raise the stock rev limit
- Raise idle
- Any ignition timing change
- Any fuel mapping change
- Any injector timing
- Any injector phasing
- remove or change annoying limp modes that may ruin your race
- remove warning buzzers when removing oil injection
