3.3 Liter OMC (Ficth) Block
I started working on this engine in the late 90's when it was a prototype. It was a terrible casting with huge mismatches when the foam was glued together. It also requires a crazy amount of porting. We were so excited about this 3.3 but immediately learned this big cubic inch engine made great bottom end torque and good peak power but was a turd on the top. We also discovered how easy it was to explode cast pistons at high rpm. It was also very evident that this new big bore was designed to push heavy fishing boats on plane. The factory changed the rod ratio by shortening the rods by a ½ inch. This was perfect for its design but not so user friendly for racing. The short rod has extremely high piston speeds and crazy friction. We did win a few races with a carb version of this engine but shelved this project for years as we were only capable of a little under 400 hp with little over rev.
Then came Gary Finch. Gary is a buddy of mine that helps me with my race boat and I thank him for all his help in winning so many races. Gary owns a 3.3 Ficth, so I volunteered to hop it up. We bolted on the best of every thing and gave it the best port job I could do. We were planning on huge torque which it had but as it did years ago it made only made 395 hp and fell of a cliff on the top end. The short rod and piston coupled with the small pipes on this block we felt were the cork. We switched to the long rod and our race 3.3 piston losing almost zero bottom end but gained huge on top. Well over 400 hp. Further exhaust chest mods made this into a 450 hp torque monster with good over rev.
This project is the basic platform of our current 3.3 do it your self sleeve and piston kit. Sam Jenkins did a great job this year with this kit. He ported his own block using our DBR template. It is reliable, has killer bottom end and revs to high 9000 rpm's when geared short. This is what he won this years world championship with. I am sure it would go another season and be competitive.
